Nickel & Nickel Winery in Napa Valley was designed as an authentic interpretation of historic American farm architecture, with a commitment to preserving traditional character down to the finest detail. The client’s vision called for a winery campus that felt as though it had evolved naturally over generations, resulting in a collection of timber-frame fermentation buildings, agricultural barns, and carefully crafted structures that reflect the region’s rural heritage. Despite a substantial production program, the design successfully maintains a modest and approachable presence within the landscape, creating a winery experience that feels intimate, timeless, and deeply connected to Napa’s agricultural traditions.

The project’s key spaces include state-of-the-art fermentation rooms, expansive barrel cellars, and iconic timber-frame barns that serve as both functional production facilities and architectural landmarks. A significant engineering challenge involved accommodating heavy winery equipment and storage loads while minimizing the visual impact of the facility. This was achieved through a parking-garage-style reinforced concrete cellar structure capable of supporting substantial weight above while housing critical wine storage below grade. The result is a highly efficient winery that seamlessly integrates advanced production requirements with historically inspired architecture, making Nickel & Nickel a distinctive example of winery design in Napa Valley.
